Eski Türkçe'de "alma" diye bilinen elmanın, rengi olan "al" (kırmızı) dan geldiği düşünülmektedir. Elmanın ilk olarak Kuzey Anadolu'da, Güney Kafkaslar, Rusya'nın güneybatısında kalan bölgeler ve Orta Asya (Kazakistan'ın doğusu) dolaylarında ortaya çıktığı sanılmaktadır.

Alma, yani elma kelimesinin dilimize nerden geldiği hakkında bir çok görüş vardır. Bu görüşlerin ikisinden bahsetmek istiyorum:

Nişanyan, elmanın muhtemelen Hint-Avrupa kökenli bir kelime olduğunu ve “abel” kelimesinden geldiğini ileri sürmüştür, fakat 11.yy’da Türkçede yaşayan alma ve almıla sözcüklerinin ödünç olması teoriden ileriye gidememiştir. Türklerde yer adı Almatı (Doğu Türkistan’da ve Kazakistan’da) ve Elmalı (Anadolu’da) biçimlerinde yaygındır.

İnternette “elma”kelimesiyle ilgili bir araştırma yaparken Dr .Pervin Ergun’un makalesi gözüme çarptı. İyi hazırlanmış bu makalenin ilginizi çekeceğini düşündüm. Bu makaleden size biraz bahsetmek istiyorum:

Makalenin başında, Dr. Pervin Ergun makalenin özetini kısaca yazmış: “Sahalar, hayat ağacını Aal Luuk Mas şeklinde adlandırırlar. O, bütün dünya kültürlerinde olduğu gibi kâinatın merkezine yerleşen üç alemi birbirine sabitleyen temel direktir. Yaratılışın başında yaratılan kozmik ağaç, bütün Aal Luuk Mas, bütün Türk dünyasında hayat ağacı ile ilgili anlatılanların en güzeli ve en detaylısıdır. Hatta bu fikir bütün Dünya kültürleri için geçerlidir. Bütün canlıları besleyen, koruyan bu ağaç, Tanrı’nın kutlu ağacıdır.”

Makalede, Türklerin kutsal saydığı bu ağacın elma olduğundan ve eskiden Aal Luuk Mas şeklide adlandırıldığından, daha sonra da haploloji yolu ile "alma"ya dönüştüğü söyleniyor.Ayrıca makalede, Aal Luuk Mas sözcüğünün etimolojisine de yer verilmiştir:

Aal kelimesi, geçen yüzyılda kaydedilen folklor metinlerinde ve sözlüklerde tek başına kullanılmamıştır. Tek başına anlam taşımayan bu söz, kutsal, sönmeyen, ev, ocak vb. gibi kelimelerle birlikte tanımlanmıştır. Türk boylarında genel olarak kullanılan al sıfatı bu durumda aal’ın daha genç formatı olarak kabul edilebilir. Gerçek anlamı çözülmeyi bekleyen kelimenin bütün Türk dünyasında bilinen bir anlamı açık kırmızı, turuncu, ateş rengidir. Ayrıca al renk Rusça’da ve eski Türkçe'de iyilik, güzellik, narin anlamlarında da kullanılmıştır. Cesarete sahip olan kutsal kahramanlara ve insanlara iyilik getirmeyen kötü ruhlara verilen bir ad veya sıfat olduğunu belirtir.

Aal kadar olmasa da, luuk kelimesi de arkaiktir (klasik çağ öncesinden kalan). Luuk kelimesi, Türk dünyasında ulı, ulug, uluğ, ulux, ulığ, ulıx, ulık, ulığ, vb. varyantlarla karşımıza çıkan ulu sıfatının Saha yerinde aldığı formdur.

Terimin üçüncü kelimesi olan "mas"ın etimolojisi ile ilgili değişik düşünceler vardır. Pekarskiy sözlüğünde, kelimenin Türkçe olmadığını, kökeninin Tunguz-Mançur veya Moğolca’da ağaç anlamında kullanılan mo (moo) veya mod olabileceğini belirtir. Köklü ağaç, kesilmiş ağaç, odun, ağaçtan yapılan inşaat malzemeleri vb. anlamlarda kullanıldığını söyler. Everstov, Azeri, Başkurt, Tatar, Türkiye Türkçesinde hem ağaç hem de orman anlamında kullanılan meşe (misâ, mişâ, bisâ, mişe, bişe) kelimesinin sondaki ünlü harfi düşmüş şekillerinin Saha Türkçesinde görüldüğünü belirtir.

Kelime bilimi, semantik, fonetik ayrımlarını ve kıyaslı tarih analizi yöntemlerini kullanarak Aal Luuk Mas teriminin prototipinin alma, elma olabileceğini savunur. Eski Türkçe’de alımla, almıla, almula şekillerinde geçen ve bütün Türk dünyasında en yaygın kullanılan adlardan olan elma alma, ulma (Çuvaş), olma (Özbek), eskiden aal mas şeklinde ağacın adı iken bugün sadece meyvesini ifade etmeye başladığını belirtir.

Everstov’u böyle bir sonuca götüren delillerden biri de diğer boylarda kullanılan kem elması-cennet elması (Azeri, Anadolu), urman alması (Tatar), ağaş alması (Nogay) söyleyişlerinin zamanla tek kelime gibi söylenmeye başlanmış olabileceğidir: aal mas>aal-mas>aalmas>aalma>alma. Bu durumda elma kelimesinin eski şekli olan Aal Luuk Mas’ın güzel ulu ağaç şeklinde tanımlanabileceğini belirtir.
